Artist Carol McArdle stands by one of her larger paintings at Wildchild Gallery in Matlacha.
If she's not at home, chances are painter Carol McArdle is visiting a state park, caught up in the landscapes and juxtaposition of the plants that have grown there for centuries.

"The Real Florida" is the inspiration for her latest series, one that she is still exploring.

"It's fast disappearing," McCardle said of the local landscape. "We have such an amazing ecosystem here. We have such great state parks here, but when you go it's not instantly awesome. You have to look for it, but then you see it. I'd like to preserve some of that."

Her work now is very different from her first sketches, produced when she was a child in boarding school in Great Britain.

"From the time I was 10 I knew I was an artist," McArdle said.

She reproduced pen and ink drawings and illustrations from the Bible, but moved on to images from the world around her as she matured.

Since moving to the United States in 1992, McArdle has painted murals on commission, and worked on her own art the rest of the time. Her camera is her constant companion, just in case something unusual catches her eye.

"When I go and look at nature, I find it absolutely breathtaking," she said. "Mother Nature is the best artist ever. It centers me. It's that feeling I'm trying to capture. I hope I can reward people with that when they see my paintings."
